Scenario

You have been asked to revise an existing online module for university-level learners from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, including students with disabilities and neurodivergent learners.
The current module is heavily text-based, presented in a single language, and lacks interactive elements or accessibility features.
Your task is to propose practical improvements to make this module more inclusive, accessible, and engaging for all students.

Activity steps

Step 1 – Analyse the scenario

Reflect on the scenario and answer the following:

  • What are the main barriers to inclusion in the current design?
(e.g., single format delivery, complex academic language, lack of captions, absence of assistive tools)

📝 List 3–5 barriers in a personal document or notes file.

Step 2 – Apply inclusive principles

For each identified barrier, propose a practical solution. Use the following guidelines:

Inclusive Principle Examples
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Offer materials in varied formats: text, audio, video, visuals; allow multiple means of engagement and response
Assistive Technologies Enable screen readers, captions, transcripts, simplified texts
Differentiated Instruction Provide learners with a choice of assessment formats (e.g. video, infographic, written task)
Digital Accessibility Ensure mobile compatibility, contrast clarity, large fonts, alt-text for images
Cultural Responsiveness Include diverse authors, case studies from different contexts, avoid stereotypes

📄 Create a table or list of at least 3 concrete improvements that align with the barriers you identified.

Step 3 – Synthesis and reflection

Write a short paragraph (up to 200 words) answering the following questions:

  • Which change do you consider the most urgent to implement, and why?

  • Which one is the easiest to apply with the tools you already use?

  • Which one could have the greatest impact on learner engagement and equity?

💬 This reflection supports critical thinking and connects design ideas to your real practice.
